A few people have inboxed me about why I'm reopening the shop on a Wednesday.
"Why Humpday?" They ask.
"Primo Day." I reply.
Christopher "DJ Premier" Martin was born March 21, 1966. His production has been a staple in hip-hop since the 80's. The 'Primo Sound' is the quintessence of East Coast hip-hop: funky arrangements, rugged drums, jazzy samples and spot-on scratching. He's painted instrumental landscapes for Nas, Jay-Z, Christina Aguilera, D'Angelo, Mos Def, ASAP Ferg and Notorious B.I.G. but is best known for his contributions as the production half of Gang Starr and Phryme.
As a DJ and beatmaker, I've always looked to DJ Premier as a guiding light. He has an aggressive DJ style, diverse sampling range and is still one of the funkiest drum programmers in hip-hop. That said, I could not think of a better day to reopen. I mean, it's not everyday you get to set up shop on your idol's birthday.
